Chişinău Rising Philharmonic

Serghei Lunchevici National Philharmonic, situated in the heart of Chișinău, Moldova, will be a new cultural landmark for the city of Chișinău. Before the fire of 2020 which destroyed a majority of the National Philharmonic’s structure, the National Philharmonic  was constantly morphing spatially and as a cultural icon throughout the past 100 years, which included the original establishment in 1912, extensions and rehabilitations taking place between 1920-1930, and 1957-1968. We sought to comprehend the unique narrative embedded within its varied components, each representing a specific epoch of architectural history. Consequently, our design embraces these historical segments as foundational elements, fusing them into a cohesive whole through the thoughtful incorporation of pure geometric elements and spatially light passageways, where the service and served spaces are hierarchically delineated. The courtyard distinguishes between the old and new while providing a dynamic space for patrons to explore. This courtyard transitions from rectilinear forms on the periphery, mirroring the original structure, to an inner theater space characterized by the warmth of timber materials. These multiple courtyard areas foster community and serve as gathering spaces for the public to appreciate the arts, celebrating the philharmonic's rich history and promising future. Ultimately, Serghei Lunchevici National Philharmonic embodies the enduring beauty of cultural institutions as they gracefully evolve over time.
