Kathok Monastery Tripitaka Museum

Kathok Monastery Tripitaka Museum is situated in close proximity to the Kathok Monastery, the cradle of the Nyingma school in Tibetan Buddhism.

The Museum will create a living repository of Tibetan knowledge and craftsmanship. At its core, the museum will safeguard the invaluable Tripitaka printing blocks while also serving as a workshop for the continuation of the UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage – the printing of the Tripitaka.

Visitors will have the unique opportunity to witness the ancient printing process in action, bridging the gap between artifacts encased in history and the vibrant present.
The Museum design abstracts and extends traditional Tibetan spatial convention. The juxtaposition of perpendicular rectilinear shapes with subtle angles, the interplay between courtyard spaces, cloisters, and interior chambers, and the harmonious balance between stone exterior walls and interior grided timber structures.

The Museum centers around a timber structure system, featuring angled columns and undulating floor plates, it creates a continuous, multi-level surface that mimics the sensation of walking in nature or the spiritual practice of "Kora." This design challenges conventional notions of sacred space, and provides a unique take on what is the logical continuation of the practice of spatial curation in a tradition that has seen convention unaltered for recent centuries.
